SPRING BREAK '83

(A Coming Of Age Teen Comedy)
Written by Mars Callahan

The Success of the Genre

Teen Comedies
Teen comedies are a typically a gold mine! The theatrical releases generate millions, change pop culture and are some of the funniest movies of all time. On top of that, they have an extended life on home video. Of course, they target teens, who have been proven to be the most likely movie-going demographic to watch a particular film over and over again and then buy it on video/dvd to do the same at home. But they also hit homeruns with adults of all ages as they humorously remind us our awkward teenage years. By definition, a teen comedy deals with oversexed high school or college students coming of age, gross humor, embarrassing pranks, crazy parties with bikini clad voluptuous women, poor loser geeks competing with rich preppie jocks, conflicts with parents, adolescent fantasies and lots and lots of side-splitting slapstick humor. Spring Break ’83 will be no different. It is true to the genre and promises to be filled with all of the above and more. In the midst of spring break madness, our geeks actually beat the jocks, win the girls, put on a rock concert and save a local hangout from being leveled in the wake of a condo development. Not bad for a week’s work!!!!

Spoof Movies
It’s hard to believe, but Spoof Movies have evolved into a genre of their own. Finding their beginnings in monthly Mad Magazine parodies of the 70’s and 80’s, Spoof Movies are now some of the most profitable movies in history. The world just can’t get enough of them and of course every few years there is plenty of new material to make another one. Spring Break ’83 spoofs everything that was great about the 80s from the music to the parties and everything that is funny and typical of the old beach movies and the over-the-top frat house/college movies. Spring Break ’83 is outrageous fun and a good time for everyone.

Franchise Opportunities
Some of the highest grossing movies of all time are Franchise films. A Franchise film is one that reuses the same theme and characters in a second or third movie (or even a 6th movie as is the case with Police Academy) in a different but similar situation. Spring boarding off the foundation built in the release of a first film, subsequent movies have the added advantage of all the press, advertising and success of the first movie generating substantial almost guaranteed core ticket sales to an already established fan base. Spring Break ’83 presents a natural franchise opportunity—think about Spring Break ‘84, ’85 or ’93 , 2003, etc…or Winter Break ’83, 84’ 85… or Summer Break ’83, ’84, ’85. The possibilities are endless and potential exponentially rewarding.
